"Oscar Molina Solo"

The works in this exhibition are inspired by and emanate from Molina's vivid memories of his treacherous journey through the desert at the age of 16 -- he was escaping the violence of then war-torn El Salvardor, hoping to find safe haven and a better life in the United States.  Never before seen "Children of the World" sculptures in bronze are paired with paintings from the companion series "Raindrops" in which cleansing rain washes down upon the travelers, illuminating their dreams, strength and beauty.   In the rear gallery, the exhibition continues with abstract paintings from Molina's "Children of the World" series, opening a window into Molina's dreamlike memories as part of a multitude of humanity moving in procession through the unknown into the unknown.

Artist's Talk: Paton Miller: Around the World in 40 Paintings

Indeed this talk will be fascinating— get a glimpse into the mind of Paton Miller, who has led a vibrant, peripatetic life—much of which has been lived by the water—, he has remained profoundly tied to his family history and the place he considers to be home. World travel, self-knowledge, identity, and sense of place combine and motivate a unique style that involves exploration of materials and process through figure and landscape, painting and drawing, as well as abstraction and fragmentation that inhibits pure representation and straightforward narrative interpretation.

Paton Miller: Around the World in 40 Paintings

OPENING RECEPTION SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 19TH, 5-7PM
While Miller has led a vibrant, peripatetic life—much of which has been lived by the water—, he has remained profoundly tied to his family history and the place he considers to be home. World travel, self-knowledge, identity, and sense of place combine and motivate a unique style that involves exploration of materials and process through figure and landscape, painting and drawing, as well as abstraction and fragmentation that inhibits pure representation and straightforward narrative interpretation.

Among the paintings selected is a mural-like piece called The Day’s Catch (2022), worked in oil and epoxy on canvas and panel (66 x 96 inches). Like another piece, the oil on panel entitled Giants (2022, 58 x 84 inches), it features a consistent motif in Miller’s work, that of “man on the water”. The Day’s Catch also depicts a variety of drawn and painted objects, including a hammer, nails, and a frame structure, which could allude to the artist’s experience as a builder/contractor. These elements might also suggest the early, childhood influence of classical animated cartoons, which he attributes as influential to his pursuit of art. Overall, Miller’s artwork transmits an aura of adventure, discovery, and enchantment.

Visible Language by Charneco / Vignoli

to Oct 10

Visible Language by Charneco / Vignoli

A magnificent clash of true artists-

From early in her career, Darlene Charneco developed her own ritual process and tactile language. The artist often creates what she refers to as “tactile pages”: three-dimensional, mixed media works that serve, “to orient, sense, and express within a world that is rapidly being reconfigured by the evolution of communication networks”. The show will include a hammered nail piece from 2004, the 60 x 60-inch Emerging Architecture, alongside selections from two ongoing series of works titled Prayers and Perceptions. All the artworks demonstrate the consistent thread in Charneco’s work that relates to language, systems of communication, all structures that are historic and ever evolving.

Alex Vignoli’s Livros (Books) and the related series Too Many Stories transmit the fundamental way in which humanity has told stories since antiquity. Vignoli aims to tell “visual stories” in limited-edition prints that feature books and periodicals as their subject matter. Exploring the sculptural qualities of these objects, the artist creates three-dimensional compositions which he captures photographically. He rolls and folds the books to, “make more graphic images from these pages...[allowing] their stories to unfold while reading (looking).” The ongoing Livros series is limited purely to the physical manipulation of the books, while in Too Many Stories, begun in 2016, Vignoli adds digital manipulation to further the interpretation of how we see and hear stories; how we acquire knowledge, and how, “knowledge moved the world to the digital era”.
