Franco Cuttica

Argentina, 1990

Franco Cuttica is a sculptor who works primarily with driftwood and who is most well-known for his hauntingly beautiful life-sized driftwood horses.  The artist tells us, “The driftwood itself is artwork . . . conceived by the greatest artist, mother nature.”

Cuttica’s subjects and mediums of choice blend the contemporary with natural processes and traditional materials.  Lighting his completed sculptures on fire is part and parcel to his work and is, indeed, his trademark.  Throughout the ages, fire has been interpreted as a purifying element and, thus, lighting his sculptures on fire not only leaves the artist’s indelible mark, albeit a signature, but is also an expression of this innovative young artist’s spiritual orientation.  Cuttica’s work has been shown in the US at the Southampton Arts Center and in Buenos Aires at Espacio Enso Art Gallery.  In addition, Cuttica is regularly commissioned by private collectors to create large driftwood sculptures.

After graduating from The Ross School, the artist studied architecture at both the Pratt Institute and at Cooper Union in order to master his skills in draftsmanship and technology.  Cuttica resides and works in East Hampton, NY.
